Movie inspired illustrations
K Goes To The Cinema
K Goes To The Cinema is an artistic endeavour that showcases my passion for films and art. The project lives on Instagram and it features a series of digital illustrations inspired by movies and TV shows.
Why K Goes to the Cinema?
I've always loved movies – they open the doors to infinite other worlds, making you feel all kinds of emotions. Whenever I watch a movie I love, I find myself inspired and want to share my art and thoughts. This is why K Goes To The Cinema was born: a quirky, whimsical and minimal place where movies are transformed into another kind of art, with a unique spin.
I post new illustrations on Instagram and you can buy your favourite prints here.
🎬 Marriage Story (2019 ~ Directed by Noah Baumbach)
⏳ A stage director and his actor wife struggle through a gruelling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes. The film stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver.
Marriage Story is part of my #KDoesTheOscars series and it has been nominated for 6 awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay.
I loved loved loved this film – from the rich script, to the brilliant performances, to the raw deeper meaning. I loved it so much I watched it twice (thank you @netflix)! Marriage Story feels real, exposed and exposing, intense. It’s a sad, but also loving, story of two people who love each other and can’t be together anymore. And that argument scene – you know what I’m talking about – is simply painful and magnificent.
In my illustration I chose to depict Charlie and Nicole in their struggle between New York and Los Angeles, together but also apart. They are not looking at each other, but they are still tied by their love and their son Henry.
Have you seen Marriage Story? Is it your kind of movie?
🎬 Joker (2019 ~ Directed by Todd Phillips)
⏳ The film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian in Gotham City who will become the Joker.
As part of my #KDoesTheOscars series, I am reposting this illustration for the film Joker. It has received 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.
I was totally struck by Joker – as you might know I am not much into superheroes, but I thoroughly savoured Joker and was gripped by his slow descent into madness.
Joker is such a dark, dark character that makes me incredibly sad. Have you seen it?
🎬 Once upon a time in Hollywood (2019 ~ Directed by Quentin Tarantino)
⏳The movie is set in 1969 Los Angeles, where Rick Dalton, an aging television actor, and Cliff Booth, his stunt double and longtime friend, navigate the changing Hollywood film industry. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.
As part of my #KDoesTheOscars series, I am reposting this illustration I made last August. Once upon a time in Hollywood has been nominated for ten awards at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
I’m a Tarantino fan and was much looking forward to watching this movie. It did not disappoint me – it has everything I could wish for: a solid and entertaining plot, great acting, juicy (and bloody) surprises, an unexpected ending. Plus, as an Italian I loved the Italian storyline and all the cool Italian movie posters. I would have liked for the character of Sharon Tate to be more three-dimensional, but still truly enjoyed Margot Robbie’s performance.
I illustrated Rick, Cliff (with his dog) and a pregnant Sharon in their most eventful LA night – just before the zenith of the movie, the alternate ending that filled my heart and made me smile.
Have you seen Once upon a time in Hollywood? What are your thoughts?
🎬 The Irishman (2019 ~ Directed by Martin Scorsese)
⏳ The film follows Frank Sheeran, a truck driver who becomes a hitman involved with mobster Russell Bufalino and his crime family, including his time working for the powerful Teamster Jimmy Hoffa. It stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
Another Oscar nominated movie for my #KDoesTheOscars – The Irishman got 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Pacino and Pesci, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Now, let’s get this out of the way first: this movie is incredibly, incredibly long. That said, it’s also a very rich and intricate movie that touches many historical events in a deep way, a true epic gangster saga.
In my illustration I depicted Frank Sheeran in his sinking world of violence, darkness and power. Russell Bufalino is a silhouette in the background, influencing Frank and his decisions.

🎬 1917 (2020 ~ Directed by Sam Mendes)
⏳ During World War I, two British soldiers must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could save 1,600 of their fellow comrades.
Welcome back to my illustration series dedicated to the 2020 Oscars, #KDoesTheOscars at @KGoesToTheCinema. 1917 earned 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Original Score.
I could not wait to watch 1917 and was not disappointed. Such an intense, organic, incredible movie! I was on the edge of my seat for most of the time – and in awe of the single continuous shot.
In my illustration I wanted to recreate the immersive, rough textured feeling of the film and I chose one of the most powerful scenes to represent it. It’s chaos and light and dark and fear and unknown and hope all mixed together.
Have you seen 1917?
#Inktober 31: ripe.
And here we are, at the end of Inktober 2019. I’m closing this series with a sort of controversial illustration from the movie Call me by your name (2017), directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Why do I call it controversial? If you have seen the film, you’ll remember a certain scene where young Elio uses a ripe peach to pleasure himself. This is also a pivotal scene where he surrenders to his feelings for Oliver – a powerful meaning symbolised by a peach.
Being Italian, I’m also glad to be closing my Inktober with a movie from an Italian director. A little bonus: during the peach scene we hear a song in the background from a great Italian singer songwriter – Radio Varsavia by Franco Battiato. If you’re curious go and give it a listen, and I also recommend checking out the translated lyrics.
I hope you enjoyed my movie illustrated journey, I know that I had a great time!

#Inktober 30: catch.
There’s this tense scene in Moonrise Kingdom (2012), directed by Wes Anderson, where the characters fall from the top of a church in the middle of a storm and are dangling from a rope.
Luckily, today’s word “catch” comes in handy and the characters are caught and saved, brought back to safety and happiness. I love how Wes Anderson did that, and this is one of my Inktober illustrations with less details because I wanted to capture the rough atmosphere of the scene.

#Inktober 29: injured.
Oh, how I loved the film Lady Bird (2017), directed by Greta Gerwig! I really wanted to illustrate it for Inktober and I was glad to get the opportunity to do so with the word injured.
Christine has a broken arm, which happens in an accident that symbolises the relationship with her mother, and goes through a series of experiences where she wants to adopt a new identity and a new sense of self. At the end, though, she goes back to her roots. Such a splendid directorial debut for Greta Gerwig.

#Inktober 28: ride.
The word ride made me think of American Honey (2016), directed by Andrea Arnold. At the beginning of Inktober I illustrated another film by the same director (Fish Tank) and here I’ve almost come full circle.
American Honey is about a long and messy ride in the US where Star, the main character, tries to find herself and looks for a deeper meaning.

#Inktober 27: coat.
The first time I watched Napoleon Dynamite (2004), directed by Jared Hess, I didn’t understand it and pretty much disliked it.
When I watched a second time, a few years later, I was able to appreciate its geeky humour and its undercurrent of loneliness and disconnection.
So, for the word coat today, here you have Napoleon Dynamite in his uncool suit.

#Inktober 26: dark.
After going to the cinema to see Joker (2019), directed by Todd Phillips, I’ve been thinking about an apt illustration and I found a way to incorporate it in my Inktober challenge.
I was totally struck by Joker – as you might know I am not much into superheroes, but I thoroughly savoured Joker and was gripped by his slow descent into madness.
Joker is such a dark, dark character that makes me incredibly sad. Have you seen it yet?

#Inktober 25: tasty.
Ratatouille (2007), directed by Brad Bird, is the ultimate choice for the word tasty!
Little rat Remy is the sweetest chef ever, in the beautiful setting of Paris – Ratatouille is a wonderful animated film that I could watch over and over.

#Inktober 24: dizzy.
Memento (2000), directed by Christopher Nolan, is the movie I’ve chosen for the word dizzy. Leonard – the main character – suffers from a rare form of memory loss and is unable to store recent memories.
Why dizzy? The film follows two different timelines, one in chronological order and one in reverse, and this forces the audience to sympathise with Leonard’s memory loss.

#Inktober 23: ancient.⠀
⠀
Morla, The Ancient One, is a giant and ancient turtle who lives in the Swamps of Sadness of The NeverEnding Story (1984), directed by Wolfgang Petersen. ⠀
⠀
I am also a huge fan of the novel by Michael Ende and I immediately thought of Morla for the word Ancient.⠀

#Inktober 22: ghost.
Russian Doll (2019), created by Natasha Lyonne, has been one of my favourite tv series of 2019.
If you don’t know it, the series is based on a woman who repeatedly dies and relives the same night in an ongoing time loop. Not technically a ghost, but also not not a ghost. 🤓

#Inktober 21: treasure.⠀
⠀
The movie King of California (2007), directed by Mike Cahill, is all about looking for a treasure buried beneath a Costco – and the relationship between a father and a daughter. A little indie gem perfect for today’s word.⠀
⠀

#Inktober 20: tread.⠀
⠀
Now, this might sound weird, but please bear with me. In the movie Pin Cushion (2017), directed by Deborah Haywood, there’s a very interesting detail that made me think of the word tread.⠀
⠀
Mother Lyn and daughter Iona have just moved to a new town and have to deal with unpleasant situations, including bullying – and part of it is due to the fact that Lyn has a club foot (and needs to wear one special shoe) plus a noticeable limp. For that, she is made fun of and ridiculed. Lyn treads a cruel world indeed...⠀

#Inktober 19: sling.⠀
⠀
Here’s to Ori, brother of Nori and Dori, and his mighty sling in The Hobbit (2012), directed by Peter Jackson.⠀
⠀
If you’re a geek like me, you’re probably a big fan of The Hobbit movies...⠀

#Inktober 18: misfit.⠀
⠀
My absolute favourite family of misfits is the Hoover family from Little Miss Sunshine (2006), directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton.⠀
⠀
I’ve watched this movie many times and it has a very special place in my heart – I adore its meaning so much!⠀

#Inktober 17: ornament.
Okay, okay, it’s a bit early to think about Christmas – but this word made me think of The Grinch (2000), directed by Ron Howard. How can we forget how the green creature steals the Christmas ornaments and decorations?
The Grinch is still one of my favourite Christmas movies, and I’ll happily watch it every year.
